The Ride There
On this mid summer July morning, Mike's turn had come to drive for this weekends canoe trip. As Mike is driving, he tries to think of come back lines to say, for when the guy's start picking on his driving. This is just something the three of them do to each other, despite whoever is driving.
As Mike turns the corner, Don, and Chris are already standing and waiting. Both have this look on their face as if Mike is in trouble. Therefore, Mike already knows he is about to be picked on for something.
Right as Mike pulls into the driveway Chris, jokingly, looks at Mike, and says. "Now Mike" "What has taken you so long?" "You are a whole minute and fifteen seconds late."
"Yea, yea, okay." Mike replies giggling.
Don laughing and shaking his head, looks at Chris saying. "Chris, you know Mike's poor old truck can barely get out of the drive way, much less make it across town on time."
Mike throwing both hands in the air, and smiling. "Oh come on now guys', this truck, and I have been together for years."
Mike walks over and pats the hood of the truck, then turns his head toward both of them saying. "My old truck may not be pretty or fast but its mine and paid in full."
"You definitely got the not pretty part right." Reply Don and Chris together.
"Both of you load your stuff, so we can get going." Mike replies.
After Don and Chris put their backpacks in the back of the truck, they get in the cab with Mike. Mike backs out of the driveway, and then pulls off toward the first intersection.
As they arrive at the first intersection, and the truck starts coming to a stop the brakes start squealing.
Don looks at Chris "Oh No" "The truck is moaning already."
Chris giggling leans forward. "Hey Mike, do we need Midas for the breaks?" "Can we call you Midas Mike?" "Or perhaps call you Michael Midas?"
Mike cannot keep from laughing his self. While shaking his head he says. "All right now, both of you need to find something to pick on other then me or my truck."
Chris and Don still giggling, shake their heads in agreement.
A few moments of silence in the truck follows. Then Don just could not take it any more, jokingly asking the famous question.
"Are we there yet?"
Mike turns his head saying. "Almost and before you ask my truck is doing just fine"
No sooner then Mike said that the turn for the river came up. He then turns onto the road and proceeds toward the river.
As Mike continues to drive, Don and Chris start looking for a good spot to pull off the road and park.
Only a few moments go when they find a good place. Just as Don and Chris start to point, Mike sees the spot and pulls in to park...
The three of them get out of the truck, and take in a deep breath of fresh air. Mike, Don, and Chris stand for a moment to stretch and enjoy the scenery around them.
As the three of them turn to walk toward the back of the truck, they start undoing the knots on the ropes that hold the canoe.
Chris looking at Don says, "I believe we are going to have a good adventure today"
"Yes Chris I believe you are right"
Mike says "I Hope that it is not to adventurous." "It has been an adventure by it self just driving here with you two around."
