Color me crazy, but I once rolled my eyes at the term “love at first sight”. After all, how is it humanly possible to have a tender and powerful emotion such as love in an instantaneous moment? It’s a hard concept to swallow and nearly impossible to explain to anyone who has not experienced it firsthand.

However, having the actual experience will change any doubting Thomas the moment that it happens to them. Some things in life are best defined through experience rather than theory.

My love life has always been a bit of a disaster and I’m sure I’m not alone.  Navigating my way through adulthood has molded my opinions more into concrete than pliant rubber, although I’ve always had an open mind.

I recently became single and after a few months of self pitying seclusion, I emerged, immersing myself into the vast dating pool. Scary and awkward as a middle aged single, I was finally ready to love as if I had never been hurt before.

Perhaps it was my willingness to accept the possibility of pain that comes with the desire to find true love, but needless to say… I was ready for the first time to let my emotions go risking the chance of heartache for the possibility of love.

I took the impulsive step of writing a personal ad and posting it on a website. I received a lot of insane and unimpressive responses until one grabbed my attention. He was absolutely hysterical having closed his email “signed your future ex-husband”. I was hooked.

After several emails, we had a slight miscommunication causing my red flags to go up. We almost didn’t meet, but his apology was so humble I just couldn’t resist.

We decided to meet for the first time in person over breakfast at a local diner. We had swapped a few photos that were basically unimpressive and hardly flattering, so I wasn’t really expecting much. I sent him a quick text to let him know I had arrived then quickly stepped out of my car.

In the next instant he appeared in front me as if out of the blue.  When my eyes met his the strangest, most unexplainable thing happened. He appeared almost as if he was illuminated by a bright, white light.  For a split second he seemed to be glowing.

In hindsight, the only thing missing was the voices of angels singing softly; well that’s how it felt anyway. Without a better explanation what I felt in a single heartbeat was nothing less than spiritual.
