Looking at a lucky 12 in the 135th Preakness Stakes

The 2010 Preakness Stakes, slated for Saturday, May 15th, included 12 starters (out of a possible 14 slots). Marking the 135th anniversary of the second jewel in thoroughbred horse racing’s famous Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes is a highlight of the racing year.

Annually, the $1 million guaranteed Preakness Stakes is held at the famous and historic Pimlico Race Course, in Baltimore, Maryland. The winner of the 1 3/16-mile Preakness Stakes receives a trophy, and the winning horse is clothed in a blanket of black-eyed Susans (Maryland’s state flower).

Actually, no black-eyed Susans are used for the Preakness Stakes winner’s garland, because the famous horse race is held before Maryland’s state flower blooms. Yellow daisies or chrysanthemums are painted to appear as black-eyed Susans for the winning horse of the annual Preakness Stakes race.

Which horse would wear the winner’s black-eyed Susan garland at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course in 2010? (Scroll down for the final results.)
