A Green Thumb
We used to sit on our porch and look
At flowering shrubs, vines gone astray
And trees that were once small
Reaching for the blue skies
You asked me for some assistance
To keep this beautiful sight
From turning into an unkempt one
I told you plainly that I did not have a Green Thumb
'Pfft.... everyone has a Green Thumb' you said
I'd learned not to argue with you
So, one day I learned how to trim rose bushes
The thorns pricked my careless fingers
'Watch out' the rose bush seems to say
Another day, I pulled out dead branches
From vines so they would cooperate
to later on, bear succulent fruit
'See, you have a Green Thumb after all'
You said with your familiar smirk
Now, I admit my Green Thumb
Keeps me from the throes of loneliness
I hear your voice in the rustling of leaves
I see your vivid smile in colorful flowers
Thank you for encouraging my Green Thumb

if I’d been born with a green thumb

Old man Mister Mean Gene Crumb,
Had himself a keen, green thumb.
No one knew but I, and John,
For Gene despised most everyone.
