Used text books can seem like a great alternative to purchasing new ones. One of the biggest benefits is that fact they are cheaper. Another advantage is having the possibility that a great note taker owner the book before you. This allows you to have inside notes already laid out for your class. Now with the two main advantages listed there are some major disadvantages.
The first disadvantage is having someone else’s notes, underlining, highlighting, and scribbles all over the pages. Some people find it difficult to focus on new information when so much of it is already jumping off the page at them. The previous owner may have highlighted stuff that is irrelevant to tests, due to the fact some people are over achievers. Someone else’s marks make it more difficult for you to put your own notes in and stand out.
The second disadvantage is some information may be missing. Sure they thumb through the pages when buying the book back in college book stores, but that is about it. If a few pages of important information are missing, it will be your loss. One way to combat this disadvantage is to make sure you look through the book to your best ability to ensure everything is intact. Don’t forget to check if a CD-Rom is supposed to be included with the materials. Many students loose these helpful study tools, and the next person has to do without.
The third disadvantage which is similar to the first is that tests and quizzes may already have the answers filled in. This can be annoying when trying to quiz yourself over the information you are trying to retain. One could go through and just erase the answers, providing they are written in pencil.
The fourth disadvantage is that the books may be discarded after you use them. Universities are constantly updating the books they use, upgrading to the most recent publication. Even if the wording in the books have changed minimally, a new edition is required for the class. If you purchased a used text book for the purpose of saving money, this will eliminate your chance of selling the book back to many college book stores, and earning a little of your money back. If you are aware the book will not be reused the next semester, try to borrow a book from someone you know, or purchase one from a student who just ended the class. If you offer them a little more than the book store will, you will still end up getting it cheaper. You both win.
Used textbooks are a cost effective means of obtaining the required information without blowing the bank account. Let’s face it; college text books can cost as much as a vehicle payment. However, for people who pride themselves on their personal library, a collection of books they have stock piled over the years, a used text book throws off the aesthetics.
