Is it necessary to reset your iPad? Did you know there are two types of reset functions?
The first one is typically used when the device locks up or will not function correctly. The second is used to reset the device to the new state it was in when you received it from Apple, the store, or wherever you got it from.
To perform the most often referred to reset to get the device functioning, press and hold the power button located on the upper right top edge of the device. Within a few seconds the screen will darken and a red arrow button with a slide area labeled “slide to power off” will display along the top. Place your finger on the red button and drag it to the right before releasing it. Once released , the device will power down.
Your device is fully powered down now. It is not in a sleep state and should use very minimal, if any, power. Bear in mind, restarting from this state is not quite the same as re-powering after it has shut down into its sleep state.
To restart the device, again press and hold the power button until the Apple Logo appears in the center of the screen. It takes a few ticks longer holding the button than it would if you had powered the device off normally.
Once the device has restarted, it should be functioning again for you.
This reset is handy for when Apps will not start properly or crash after installing and some Apps, such as X-Plane may require it before each attempt to use the App. This is due to the memory hogging nature of that application and the need to ensure nothing else is using the memory for the App to load and function correctly.
Use this reset if you are having problems, it should take care of the majority of issues.
Now for the reset feature that is not often used and that most know little about.
With your device powered on, scroll to the screen with the icon of three gear cogs labeled “Settings.”
Tap the icon and select the GENERAL Button in the list on the left hand side of the screen. Once you have done so, look on the right. The first button should be NETWORK. Scroll down to the bottom on the right. There you will find RESET.
Inside this little known and little used function are multiple choices.
They are: Reset all Settings, Erase All Content and Settings, Reset Network Settings, Reset Keyboard Dictionary, Reset Home Screen Layout, and Reset Location Warnings.
