In the darkness of the day
it seems so hard to see the light;
to know what's wrong,
to care what's wrong
is such an uphill fight.
The muddy cloud of all that's there
is dark as any night;
how hard it is,
how pointless
to figure out what's right.
Does anything we do or don't
stand up to scrutiny?
We take that chance
we break that branch
on life's fast wilting tree.
it seems so hard to see the light
in the darkness of the day.
This entire race
has lost it's place
in the books that show the way.
Not the books once wrote
on skins of goats
or any other hide:
but the books that call
from in us all,
those books we've wrote inside.
It seems too hard to see the light
in the darkness of the day.
Certainly we've earned the right
to be forced to live this way.
In the darkness we must stay;
in the darkness of the day.
