Short stories: Sunrise in the garden

by Makavelli Knight

Created on: May 10, 2010

I never thought sitting in my garden with my friend Soma until sunrise could be such a rewarding experience. It all started…

It was the spring of 2009 and I was finally going to meet my pen pal of four years. Her name is Soma, twenty-three years old from East India. I was waiting for her at Columbus Circle at 59th Street in front of the subway station. The anxiety was so overwhelming until I kept on looking at my watch. I had thoughts that she might not show up to hang out.

Finally, Soma walked around the corner and she looked exactly the same as the picture I saw on her webpage. Soma was a nice looking Indian woman with a nice slim and athletic physique. Her skin tone was the color of “café au lait“. Her long straight hair was sunny auburn.  What I admired most about Soma was her emerald eyes. They sparkled like uncut diamonds. I was surprised not to see her wearing her traditional sheer sari and a tikka, but dressed in jeans and a T-shirt looking so Americanize.

“Hey, Soma, how are you?” I asked.

“Hi.” She replied so softly.

“After all these years, I’m finally meeting you.”

“Yes, you are.”

“Come on, let’s take a walk and get something to eat.”

Soma and I went out to dinner in SoHo. We had Italian food while engaging in stimulating conversation about family, career, and culture. I found her to be so easy to talk to and share my innermost deep dark secrets with. I was impressed with her knowledge of horticulture and landscaping. She loves gardening as much as I do. Her mother had a garden back in India where she planted fruits and vegetables for the family.

As the evening progressed, we wind up at a jazz club enjoying the music and dancing to the slow songs. Soma was really enjoying herself in this setting. She swung her head and hair around when the band did their renditions of some of the rap legends while grinding to the rap tunes.

When we returned to my house, I thought we would make out a little in the living room, but my older sister and her friends were there watching the movie Friday. I was somewhat pissed and I think Soma was feeling the same.

“Well, I preferred we go to your garden, if that’s okay with you.” She said.
