Our homes are one place where we are free to live embraced by our own personal taste. Every color and furniture piece can be a reflection of who we are and what we like. Of course drenching our homes in our own personal style is almost guaranteed to come with comments from others. However, we are the ones who will be living in it; therefore we are the ones who need to enjoy the space. Our homes are where we spend a large part of our lives and we need to make sure we feel welcomed and happy there.

Ways to reflect one’s own personal style is very simple. The process just takes a little time and self reflection.

Choose a paint color. Choosing a paint color may be as simple as looking in your closet. What colors do you tend to purchase the most often? If your closet is filled with black, white, grey, or khakis then you may want to stay in the neutral family of colors. Keep in mind you should not paint a room a color that you would not wear on your body. For instance, if you think yellow washes you out, do not paint your room yellow, because you are surrounding yourself in a color that does not agree with your appearance. Choose furniture.

Your closet may assist in this process as well. Is your wardrobe classic, traditional, modern, edgy, or rustic? This shows you enjoy being embraced in this style. Choosing furniture that follows the same theme will guarantee you a room you will enjoy being in. Choose accessories. A room is not complete without accessories. Look around at many stores to find the perfect pieces of art to compliment your wall color as well as your furniture choices. This may be a little time consuming, but you will be looking at these choices for years, so it is best to make them good ones. Don’t let lamps and other lighting fixtures be an afterthought in the room. Lighting is an accessory that has the potential to make or break an overall look. Make sure the lighting choices compliment the space design.

Personal style is a personal matter. Many homeowners are unhappy with their space because they feel the space does not show who they are. Decorating your house in a way that expresses who you are as an individual not only brings unity between you and your home, but also peace between you and your home.
