Freelance writers sometimes feel that they have to accept any writing assignments that come their way. However, there are times when you should turn down work and in fact, that you may be ethically obligated to turn it down. Here are some cases where it is okay to turn down work as a freelance writer.
Moral objections - Freelance writers often have moral objections to various types of content. This may include adult content, content that they feel could harm someone or content they simply do not agree with. When you are not comfortable writing about a topic it is difficult to do your best work. In this case when you are asked to do morally objectionable freelance writing, it is okay to turn down work.
Inadequate skills - Most freelance writers understand their shortcomings. Your skills should always determine whether you will accept an assignment or not. If you do not have the skills to complete an assignment thoroughly and well, it is okay to turn down work.
Time constraints - Sometimes a freelance writing professional has enough work and they simply do not have the necessary time to dedicate to a new assignment. In this case, it is ethically a responsibility to turn down work. If you know other freelance writers, you may want to consider turning the assignment over to them, or you may recommend them to the client.
Pay scale - Freelance writing is very competitive. Because of this there are potential buyers of services who feel it is appropriate to "low ball" rates. If you are averaging $25 to $30 per hour and a potential client is offering you what would be the equivalent of $10 to $15 then it is okay to turn the work down. If you accept a lower rate just to get the client, they can capitalize on your time and before you know it you will not have time for higher paying clients.
There are some cases when freelance writers may feel they have to accept work. They may be going through a long dry spell and feel that they need to accept any work that is available to them. However, freelance writing professionals should set their own limitations. There are times when freelance writing professionals should know it is okay to turn down work. Use your own best judgment when talking with potential clients. Make sure that you are comfortable with all aspects of the assignment. There are other times when it is okay to turn down work, each freelance writing professional is free to determine and set their own standards for when it is okay to turn down work.
