Staten Island is often referred to as New York's “Forgotten Borough,” and this moniker is especially appropriate when it comes to travelers. With all the wonders of New York's Manhattan Island across the harbor, it isn't any wonder that Staten Island draws very little in the way of the tourist trade. Staten Island does have some wonderful attractions, however, and it makes for a fantastic contrast when you wish to get a break from the high-energy Manhattan.

Staten Islands most popular, most famous, and most accessible attraction is hardly on Staten Island at all. Many tourist take the Staten Island Ferry to enjoy some much needed open space and to enjoy the sights of New York harbor. The Ferry departs from downtown Manhattan around the clock. This free trip takes about 25 minutes each way, and affords magnificent views of the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn, the Verrazzano Bridge, and lower Manhattan. Avoid rush hour crowds to enjoy more elbow room and less impeded views.

Once on Staten Island, most tourists make a U-turn and head back on the next ferry. With a little advanced planning, it is easy to enjoy a slightly longer trip to Staten Island via the ferry. One fun way is to catch a Staten Island Yankees game. Richmond County Bank Ballpark, home of the SI Yankees, is right next to the ferry terminal. These Yankees are a minor league affiliate of their parent team in the Bronx. Family fun and fantastic views abound at this Minor League ballpark.

For a shorter trip, plan to stroll around the area to visit the 9/11 Memorial, or enjoy the architecture of Staten Island's century old borough hall. Staten Island's north shore is downtown Staten Island, and host many great buildings; including the magnificent St. George Theater.

If you are interested in a cultural experience, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden is just a short, seven minute bus ride from the ferry. This wonderful collection on buildings once served as a home for retired sailors. It now hosts art shows, concerts, classes, and a number of exquisite gardens. Take time to stroll the grounds and gardens. Entrance to the grounds is generally free to the public, but check to make sure there isn't an event which may require an entrance fee.

Other Staten Island cultural site will require more planning, and are best visited via car. The Alice Austin House, known at the time as “Clear Comfort,” was home to photographer Alice Austin. It was built in 1690, and it now houses
