Controversy behind Sean Hannity and the Freedom Concerts

by Laura Montana

Created on: May 09, 2010

You're a great American!  This is the greeting callers use when speaking to Sean Hannity and he responds in kind.  There is no doubt the theme of  patriotism runs through most, if not all, of Sean Hannity's tv and radio shows.

Since the year 2003 Sean Hannity, with the help of retired Lt. Col. Oliver North, has been promoting 'Freedom Concerts.'  The purpose of these concerts is to raise money to benefit our wounded soldiers and to educate their children.  An honorable endeavor.  Over ten million dollars has been raised from ticket sales and  the concert store.

The people who attend these concerts do so for two reasons: to hear good music and to raise money to support our troops.  Some may spend more then they can afford because, after all,  it's going to a good cause.

Recently there have been serious questions raised concerning exactly how much money is actually going to our injured troops and their children.  Freedom Concerts and it's affiliate,  Freedom Alliance,  along with Sean Hannity and Oliver North are being investigated by CREW (Center for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) and the Federal Trade Commission on charges that their donation numbers do not match their claims.

Each time Sean Hannity publicizes the Freedom Concerts, he stresses that 100 percent of the money raised (it has been reported he states  'profits' and "donations') are added to the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund.  According to CREW that is not accurate.

When approached with questions about these allegations, Freedom Alliance President, Tom Kilgannon said, “There  is absolutely no merit to the scurrilous charges launched against  Freedom Alliance from two of the most left-wing organizations  in the country.  The smear-mongers  who have launched this  politically motivated witch hunt against  Freedom Alliance will be proven wrong  as we aggressively defend  ourselves in the days and weeks ahead.”

Kilgannon's response came as no surprise.  Hannity and company make no secret of their contempt for people they refer to as 'libs.'  Saying the investigation is based on trumped up charges by a left-wing organization doesn't fly. In fact, it makes them look guilty.  Reading over the lists of current investigations by CREW, you will find there are slightly more Democrats being investigated at this time than Republicans.
