I’m going to lay out in exacting detail exactly where I stand on this whole immigration thing. I want to say that first of all, I am not a racist. I have nothing against people from Mexico, or any other place in the world. I can’t say that with certainty about ALL the people in Arizona who support this, however. You may remember, after all, that Arizona was the last state in the union to make an official holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr.
On a side note, I really wish MLK had been born in June or July. We already have a ton of holidays during the winter time. “YAY! A day off in mid-February! I guess I’ll … sit at home.” I’ll bet more people would have jumped to support a day off in his name if it had been better placed on the calendar! Hopefully someday, somebody important will die and have been born in the summertime – I want HIS birthday off. Yet another reason to love our founding fathers – they had the good sense to make Independence Day in July!
At any rate, this isn’t about race, for me at least. It’s about security, and respect for the law. If the immigration quotas are unfairly slanted against Mexicans, then I’d be in favor of looking at adjusting the numbers. But that’s no reason to completely circumvent the law in the meantime. Like it or not, we live in a nation where the rule of law takes precedence. Not “fairness”, not “does it make us feel good”, not “is this PC enough”, but “what does the law say”. Fortunately, we also live in a country where we can CHANGE the law if we decide we don’t like it. But there’s a process for doing that, and it hasn’t been done in this case, so until changes are made, we have to follow what it says.
This whole concept of “sanctuary cities” flies in the face of that, and those responsible should be tried for treason. Yeah, I said it. Those people have a responsibility to enforce the laws of the land they serve, and by openly flaunting the fact that they aren’t, they’re in obvious violation of that oath. Again, if you don’t like the law, work to change it within the system you’ve been elected into. If you can’t do that, then sorry, you have to enforce what’s on the books or be prepared to face
