Possible North Korea target: Deepwater Horizon oil platform

by Lindsay Rosen

Created on: May 08, 2010

The idea that the Obama Administration is secretly covering up an attack by North Korea on the Deepwater Horizon oil platform is preposterous. While the issue has gained some national media coverage most of the information on this claim is provided by bloggers who quote the European Union Times. The European Union Times cites a report circulated by the Kremlin that the “US ordered a media blackout” following the destruction of the Deepwater Horizon by a North Korean torpedo.

Lets face it, other than this Russian report that there is no evidence that North Korea attacked the British oil rig off our coast. The report claims that the rig was hit with two torpedoes before the submarine exploded underneath the oil rig in an apparent suicide mission by the 17th Sniper Corp troops. Russia says that North Korea attacked to provide Obama with an “impossible dilemma” regarding the oil spill, nuclear proliferation regulations, stopping the oil spill via “detonating a thermonuclear device.”

The credibility of this information is highly questionable with most of it being supported by bloggers with obvious anti-Obama views and rhetoric as well as obvious conservative bias. But what about the actual evidence? Should Russia be believed? BP reported on May 7, 2010 that the explosion of the oil rig was caused by a methane bubble that shot up the drill column. Hmm, that’s odd nothing about North Korean mini-submarines…However there is evidence via broken barriers and seals that a methane bubble passed through the drill shaft. This is being reported by both MSNBC and FOX News while neither mention the North Korea conspiracy. Bloggers and those who believe the conspiracy say this is because of the media blackout, the media wont show American’s the truth. But then again, which are you going to believe? Multiple legitimate sources with no evidence of this or the Russians and some bloggers? I mean this is even too extreme for FOX News.

It doesn’t take much time or effort to go on a hunt for evidence. The Russian article says that a SWAT team has been dispatched by Obama to protect other oil rigs and yet this is also incorrect. On April 29, 2010 President Obama announced that SWAT teams had been dispatched by the Department of the Interior in order to inspect all rigs in the gulf. At no point was it ever made clear to anyone that the Deepwater Horizon sunk because of a North Korean atck although speculation of
