Essential wardrobe items for a career woman

Getting your first "big girl" job can be  an amazing experience, but it also  come with the realization that your pair of black slacks and collection GAP cable knit sweaters may not cut it any longer as your "professional" wardrobe. Don't fret, there are ways to do this on a budget before you get that first paycheck and still get all of the classic essentials that will hold you for years to come.

Your best-bet essentials:

1)  Shoes- start from the bottom up.  Comfortable, good-looking shoes will set the tone for any outfit because if you are grimacing in pain from uncomfortable shoes, or tripping over yourself in too-high heels, no one is going to notice that freshly pressed shirt or brand new skirt.  Make sure that before you go shopping to that you find out what your new job's dress code says about open toed shoes, sandals, ect.

- Black & Brown heels (or low wedges if you are like me and have weak ankles). Getting both black and brown will allow you to mix and match, and make sure you can run in them if you had to since you never know when your boss is going to need an emergency errand.

- Ballet flats in several different colors, black, brown, and this is where you can add a splash a color (red, orange, blue).

- A splurge pair, yes you read that right, you should by one pair of shoes that you love. If that means that you don't buy them right away, that's fine, but at some point during the first few months of your new job treat yourself and buy that pair you've been eyeing.

Where- my recommendations are DSW, Marshall's, and Famous Footwear.  You will be able to find great quality shoes, at great prices, and if you remember to always start with the clearance rack you'll be amazed at what you can find for under $30.00 a pair!

2) Pants - knowing what type of pants fits you best will allow you to target those stores and not waste your time.  Unless you already know, this is going to require you to try on pairs before purchasing.  My suggestion would be if you are fortunate go to your local outlet center where you will be able to get great quality clothes at discount prices.  If not, take some friends and make a day of it at your local mall.

- Two pairs our black, well tailored pants. Personally, I find that Banana Republic Factory Outlets have a great quality selection at reasonable prices, and they last forever if washed properly. (Yes, washed at home and not dry-cleaned).
