Facts about Rottweilers

Created on: May 07, 2010

The Rottweiler is an extremely handsome and intelligent breed of dog. Unfortunately, this breed receives enough negative media attention to maintain a bad reputation though. Anyone who understands the facts about Rottweilers will realize that this is not really a bad breed of dog. Following is a detailed description of the Rottweiler.

Origin

The Rottweiler was originally bred in Germany. Modern breeders believe that this dog was most likely descended from the Italian Mastiff. The Germans originally bred the Rottweiler as a herding dog. However, this breed became useful in many other areas over time.

Physical Appearance

This is a rather robust breed and usually weighs between 100 and 120 pounds. The Rottweiler also maintains a rather stocky and muscular build. This dog sports little to no variation in coloration; all dogs are black with tan markings. The Rottweiler has small, triangular ears and a long tail which is usually docked. The eyes are always brown and maintain a soulful expression. Although the Rottweiler is such a large breed, it should be noted that litters are quite large as well. Litters of at least 12 puppies are not uncommon.

Personality

Intelligent, loyal and protective are all accurate descriptions of the Rottweiler. The problem with this breed’s loyalty is that it can sometimes turn into aggression. Rottweilers become very attached to their masters and occasionally become overly protective. To prevent this sort of behavior, early socialization is a must with this breed. Ideally, a Rottweiler should be exposed to obedience training as a puppy. Additionally, a Rottweiler puppy should be introduced to social situation early. Social situations should include meeting other people, playing with other dogs, going to the park, etc. Rottweilers are often extremely affectionate with children. However, no dog should be left unsupervised with a child.

Uses

Due to its high levels of intelligence, the Rottweiler maintains several occupations. Originally, the Germans used the breed for herding and guarding livestock. Now, in addition to herding animals, the Rottweiler works as a helper dog, a guard dog, and has even been used in police work. After all, this is one of the easiest breeds to train – no wonder it’s such a versatile animal.

Hopefully the Rottweiler will someday shed its negative reputation and become known for its intelligence and loyalty. If you decide to own a Rottweiler, do some research to be sure that you find a reputable breeder. Also, keep in mind the massive size of this breed. Make sure that you have enough yard space to accommodate such a robust dog.
