Job interview: What not to do

In today's job market it is important to submit a memorable resume in order to get your foot in the door for an interview.  The issue is many of those resume's have cumbersome lengthy details.  Human Resources Managers or other hiring managers receive numerous resume's each day and most do not take the time to read the full in depth resume.  For the most part, Human Resources Managers can quickly scan resume's, spending only 30 seconds or so and determining whether to contact a candidate for an interview.

In this day and age, computer knowledge is a must.  Employers are interested in the resume's that show strength in computer usage and specific programs.  In some cases employers utilize a program specific to their business but still need a demonstration that the candidate is computer literate.  It is important that the candidate list in very brief form what the extent of their computer knowledge is such as listing Word, Excel, Peoplesoft, Kronos, etc.

It is also important that a candidate highlight their work experience that is directly related to the job they are applying for.  If you have previous experience such as a daycare attendant and are applying for a clerical position, most of your daycare experience is irrelevant, such as feeding and diapering children.  But you can and should list the time keeping program you utilized daily and highlight your organization skills.  Many employers only glance at resumes and scan them for only certain things that pop out and grab their attention.  Short and to the point is the key.  Employers will not take the time to read lengthy resumes full of filler to give the appearance of more experience.

Each resume should be tailored for the job being sought, each cover letter should also be tailored to the prospective employer.   You should also do research regarding the position you are seeking and know what the talent pool and your competition is and be aware of the salary range.  Many college students make the mistake of graduating college and expecting more than reasonable for their first post graduate position.  Your leadership skills in college, although impressive, will not gain a higher starting wage.  Most companies utilize a pay scale that takes education plus years of experience in the field you are seeking and will not give you credit for experience unrelated.

Remember the best key for a resume is to keep it short, informative, and maintain reasonable expectations regarding work and salary.  Resumes filled with fluff are generally passed over for those less wordy but factual.
