Researchers have proven that smoking is a disease. Deciding to quit smoking today is one of the best things a person could ever do for themselves. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 harmful chemicals including over 40 that are known causes of cancer.Smoking causes many other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, infertility, and breathing problems.
You'll need amazing will power and the true desire to stop smoking, but it can be done! Even if you have tried to stop before, you owe it to yourself to give it another shot. Stopping smoking is something you must do for your health.
When you decide to stop smoking, the following choices and tips are available to help you stop smoking once and for all!
1. Don't Do It Alone
There's plenty of support out there, including the toll free Quit Assist Line. Select a friend that you can call anytime the urge strikes. Having someone to talk to when trying to stop smoking can great improve the chances you will succeed in stopping smoking.
Medications such as Chantix can be prescribed by your doctor to aid in your quest to stop smoking. Chantix has excellent success rates, though it most insurances will not cover the cost. These prescription medications can ease withdrawl symptoms and block the enjoyable affects that smoking produced.
3. Breath
When a craving hits, take a deep breath in and hold it for 5 seconds. Slowly exhale. Do this method as many times as you need until the urge has passed. This should reduce the anxiety associated with quitting.
4. Nicotine Replacement
Nicotine replacement therapy methods such as nicotine patches and gum can reduce the craving to smoke, though they don't work for everyone. You can not smoke while using these patches, so using them requires a dedication to not light up.
5. Keep Candy
Keep a supply of candy with you at all times. Since you have gotten use to taking a cigarette in and out of your mouth, it is important to have something to replace the cigarette. Popping candy is an excellent way to occupy your mouth and hands when you want to smoke.
6. Counseling
The Quit Assist line also provides counseling, support, and advice to those who want to quit smoking. Call their toll free number at 1-877-4UQUIT to take advantage of their free services. Support is one of the best tools to succeed.
7. Don't Keep Reminders
Discard ash trays, lighters, cigarettes, and anything else that reminds you of smoking. As the old saying goes, "out of site, out of mind". With nothing there to remind you of cigarettes, you won't be consumed with thoughts to smoke.
