The Mayan Calendar and 2012 - The End or the Beginning

The Mayans lived over 3,000 years ago.  So why is a calendar they created so long ago causing such a commotion today?  The Mayans were a very advanced and intelligent people, but that does not mean that the end of their calendar predicts the end of our world.

The Mayan Calendar is a circular calendar.  It revolved around itself, much like the moon revolves around the Earth and the Earth revolves around the sun.  According to the Mayan Calendar, the beginning of time was August 13, 3114 BC.  This era actually corresponds with the earliest proof of human existence.  Unlike our traditional calendar which repeats itself each year, the Mayan Calendar is continuous for 5,125 years and that cycle ends on 12-21-2012.

What is so notorious about the day that the Mayan Calendar ends is that it ends on the winter solstice of 2012, December 21, 2012.  Even more notorious is the fact that at 11:11 pm on this very day, our sun will be in perfect alignment with our solar system, an occurrence that scientists believe only happens roughly every 26,000 years.

So why do the Mayans and 2012 symbolize the end of the world to some?  The 2012 Prophecy is not the first time the end of the world has been predicted.  Nostradamus alone predicted it at least twice.  While he did not give the exact date, December 21, 2012, he did mention the year 2012.  Is this because Nostradamus was familiar with the Ancient Mayan Calendar?  Much of Nostradamus prophecies are subject to translation, just like a fortune tellers.  You can see what you would like to see. The same is true with the end to the Mayan Calendar.  People will believe what they like about the meaning to the Mayan Calendar.  To me, it is simply propaganda created by people looking for an ending when they should be searching for the beginning.

The Mayan's understood a great deal about the cosmos.  They realized that the Earth and the planets revolved around the sun, when it was not until the 1400's that Columbus and the Spaniards came to this realization.  The Mayan's believed that our world was created from within Pleiades.  It was not until the 1990’s that the Hubble Telescope discovered that within Pleiades is a spiraling hole where stars are born.  How did a civilization that lived 3000 years ago understand so much more about our world than even we do today?  We could learn a great deal from the Mayan civilization. Not about the end of the world, but about how it began.  Maybe these secrets can be found in the Mayan calendar.

Perhaps just as the moon revolves around the Earth, and the Earth around the sun, our sun revolves in a 5,125 year cycle.  Perhaps on December 21, 2012 our sun will complete that cycle, and on December 22, 2012 that cycle will start over, giving us not an ending, but a new beginning.

Regardless of your beliefs or your spiritual guide, use December 21, 2012 as a day to renew your spiritual energy.  A day where our stars will shine brighter, where our sun will in fact be the center of our universe and where mankind will step into another day.  Because if the Mayans have taught us anything, it should be that despite Spanish Conquest or extermination, mankind and our legacy will live on.
