How to use status tagging on Facebook

by Caroline Fraissinet

Created on: May 05, 2010

Facebook is an ever-changing site, constantly adapting to fit the desires of its users.  It seems as though Facebook has been changing their layout every other day without much forewarning these days, and every day that something isn't added, users are petitioning for a new function.  This means that new features for users to take advantage of can crop up before their actual point or usefulness is ever made clear.  One such feature that popped up recently in my Live Feed is status tagging.

Status tagging in Facebook means that you can tag your friends in your status updates.  Basically, this means that you can directly link your friends to your statuses.  For example, let's say you went to the movies with your friend Jane Doe and you want to make it a status update because you had so much fun, it was such a great movie, yada yada yada.  Instead of just posting: "[you] went to the movies today with Jane," you can actually tag Jane in the post.  "Jane Doe" will be highlighted and friends can go directly to her profile just by clicking her name.  Jane will also have your status appear on his or her Wall as if it were just a regular message, so she'll know when she's tagged (that way, she can "Like" the status immediately).

Status tagging is a feature that first originated on Twitter, and the way you'd go about status tagging is exactly the same.  All you need to do is type @[your friend's name] and they will be tagged to your status.  Several months prior, users were able to link their Twitter and Facebook accounts so that status updates would be sent to a user's Twitter account and vice versa.  It is proof again that Twitter and Facebook are merging into one multi-faceted social networking tool.  The question still remains, however, which will remain more popular with social networking users.

Facebook is constantly changing to meet the needs and wants of its users.  It's a small function, but status tagging can be useful for Facebook users.  It's a great way to keep your friends in the loop or to talk about your goings on a bit more specifically.  Status tagging is a way to link yourself with your friends and update everyone on what you (and now your friends) are up to.
