School. Public enemy number one in the eyes of many teens. There are many reasons why teens hate school. As a 14-year-old just exiting middle school, I should know. I will start with the most basic reasons, and then move into the advanced reasons, giving you a journey into the eyes of a teen.
BOREDOM
First off, school is boring. Who cares that SinA/a = SinB/b = SinC/c. In school, they teach you tons of random facts that no one ever uses. If you wanted to find the length of the hypotenuse, GET YOUR YARD STICK, NOT YOUR THEOREM! Half the things you learn in school you’re not going to use and eventually forget. Teens realize this and hate the fact that they’re learning it any way. Not to mention that teens are required to sit still and do nothing for most of the day. Busy work is given in most classrooms. Some teachers will make you color and add pictures to all your work, stating that it helps the knowledge sink in, while others will repeat the same lesson multiple times in a row. Many teens find that repetitive work and absolute worthless work is one of the most boring things in school.
HOMEWORK
Homework is by far the worst part of school. You’re locked away in school for eight hours and 45 minutes (I counted), which is more than 1/3 of a day, and then, after they finally release you from the horrors of school, you are required to go home and do a summarized version of exactly what you just finished doing. So on a really bad day, I can get to school at 7:30, finish school at 4:15, and finish homework at 7:30. That’s half a day given away to school, 8 hours given to sleep, leaving 4 hours to do what I want, subtracting time for household chores and eating dinner.
USELESSNESS
School is something that is usually lesser in the eyes of teens than other activities. In a teens mind, hobbies sleep, and friends take the precedent over school. School gives you nothing but report cards and expenses for the most part, and yields no fun, money, or entertainment like other things teens could be doing with their time. Since teens don’t see any obvious results from school, except for sleep deprivation and boredom, the point of going is completely lost on them, especially since nobody they know goes around using the Pythagorean Theorem in their day to day life.
SOCIAL INTERACTIONS
Many times teens have struggles with other students at school. Whether it’s a troubled love life or being ridiculed by others, many teens resent going to school for this reason. Of course, social problems can occur between teacher and student along with student to student. Some teachers put down students when they ask questions that have already been answered or get on the teachers nerves in general. In turn, the teacher than gets on the students nerves, and nobody is happy in the end.
