How to improve your employability

In order to improve your employability, there are a few things you must consider. First and foremost, you have to have the skills to perform the job at hand. Without the proper skills, an employer will never consider hiring you. The only exception to this is when the job only requires on the job training. To get the necessary skills you need, you may enroll in courses at your your local community college. Most community colleges are offering a variety of courses in career development, technical fields, and office skills. Also, there are a variety of privately owned schools that teach things such as computer programming, cosmetics, hair styling and so on.

There is a lot of competition in the job market these days. You may be among several hundred people applying for the same job. These numbers are simply overwhelming and may discourage you from applying for specific positions. This is where you have to make yourself stand out among the other job applicants. The first place to make an impression is with your resume. The best advise here is to keep it plain and simple. Don't try to overdue it. Employers may look at several hundred resumes in a very short time. The last thing they want is to read through a lot of print. Keep it short but informative. Don't get fancy and use colored or bright paper. In some cases, this will actually leave a negative impression of you on the employer. Keep it very plain and short. If you don't know how to compose a resume, again, your local community may be able to help you. It is very important to compose a professional resume.

The employer was impressed with your resume, and you get a call to come in for an interview. This is where you need to do a little research abut the company. Try to find out as much as you can about the company. The employer may ask you why you want to work there. You have to be prepared with the answer just as if you have been working there for many years. There's nothing worse than an employer asking you that question and you just say..."I don't know." This will surly put a damper on him/her hiring you.

Armed with knowledge about the company, you want to make sure you wear the proper clothes for the interview. Here is where a lot of people make some big mistakes. The first thing I will tell you is to not wear any perfume. The person conducting the interview may be allergic to or offended by your perfume. In fact, a lot of companies have a no perfume policy. If the interviewer is offended by your perfume, this will surely make a negative impression. don't try to wear bright clothes or clothes that have a lot of color. This may en up distracting the interviewer, and you may not get the job. Wear professional clothes, and dress up enough to look professional, but don't over do it. Use some common sense. Put yourself in the place of the interviewer and try to imagine how you would feel if someone wears offensive perfume or bright colored clothes.

Last but not least, get a friend or family member and practice how you would respond to tough questions an interviewer will ask. If you do this, it will make you feel more comfortable when the actual interview takes place. You want to portray yourself to the interviewer as being cool, calm, and composed. If you follow all of these steps, your chances of getting the job will be greatly enhanced.
