Movie reviews: Super Size Me

A very amateurish film, but what the heck do you want with a budget of $5,000 and a month's worth of cheap hamburgers? Yesterday MD and I spent all afternoon and into the evening being interviewed on film (on electrons, really. It was a digital camera) for a movie being put together as a counterpoint for the much ballyhooed Supersize Me.

Morgan Spurlock, a budding documentarian who could give lessons to Al Gore, scarfed nothing but McDonald's for 30 days. He ate all on the menu at least once and if asked if he wanted it supersized, he had to accept. After a medical work-up, the 185-pound six-footer started his 30-day task. Various specialists checked him weekly.

Of course he gained 25 pounds, otherwise no movie. And the specialists showed how his various triglycerides, enzymes and gut had suffered. OK, good for him, but did he have to add the smug veggie girlfriend part? She had to be a pain in his ever-expanding butt, with her many lofty pronouncements about healthy diet. Why didn't she monitor him throughout his ordeal? Better still, why didn't she just convince him to partake of McDonald's many low-calorie meals and salads. But then, we wouldn't have had a movie.

At the end, Spurlock revealed that it took him almost a year to shed the 25 pounds of MacBlubber. In conclusion, the movie was fun to watch, especially knowing Mr. Spurlock has made millions from his modest little documentary.
