Walking for inspiration

Created on: May 03, 2010

Walking is not only a very healthy activity, it is also a great way to spark inspiration. When you are walking you are able to observe and take in what is going on in the world around you. It is possible for you to adjust your pace so that you can slow down and observe what looks most interesting to you or most beautiful. Walking allows you to see new things and to be able to be a part of nature or of the hustle and bustle of city life in a way that can spark your creative mind and inspire you.

When you are taking a walk in nature, the colors, sounds, and smells of the natural world can calm you and let you simply be at peace with yourself. As your mind settles, and the daily worries fade away, it is possible for you to think creatively and to be inspired by what is around you.

In addition to having a calming and freeing effect on your mind, walking can give you many concrete ideas based on what you observe. If you are walking, chances are you will encounter people. As you pass people on the sidewalk, or as people drive by you in the cars, use that opportunity to make up a life story for them. Create a character based on what they look like, what their emotion at that time seems to be, or what kind of car they are driving.

People are not the only things that you will observe while you are walking. There are so many things in nature that can inspire you and give you new ideas, whether for poems, songs, short stories, or full length plots. Simply coming up with a sentence to describe a flower, plant, animal, or cloud that you come across can often lead to a more developed piece. Walking can open your eyes to many different types of things, and each walk that you take can give you new ideas and inspiration.

For writers, artists, and anybody who depends on creativity on a regular basis, inspiration can often be difficult to come by. Going for a walk is a great rest for your brain and can open up your thought process all while allowing you to observe what just might be the basis for your next project. The next time you have a creativity block don’t get frustrated, get up and go for a walk.
