One of the most fascinating things about gemstones is the many different colors and styles they can come in.  Not too long ago there were two types of colored gemstones. There was the “precious,” gemstone category and “semi-precious,” category. Both were used for making gemstone jewelry. The “precious” stones were thought to be of better quality and were more expensive. The list of these gemstones included emeralds, rubies and sapphires. Other gemstones were of the semi-precious variety. Now, all colored gemstones fall in the precious category. Still included is the emeralds, rubies and sapphires but with the addition of such gemstones as the aquamarine, amethysts, opals and the onyx.

 There are many things that determine the cost of gemstone jewelry and they are the clarity, intensity of the color, cut and the fire of the stone.

 Many people don’t choose their gemstones by color or clarity though. They do not consider how the gem is cut or think of the fire of the stone. The largest selling gemstone jewelry is birthstone pieces. Birthstones make perfect gifts for your mom, daughter or niece. There are other choices that people make too, such as with the belief that certain gemstones have mystical or magic powers. Many choose their jewelry for healing purposes as well. For ages it has been thought that certain gemstones could heal or give one power or drive away unwanted spirits.

 We know that it is especially true that especially women love jewelry. They wear it to adorn and decorate an outfit or just because they love it. There is never any shortage of options to choose from when it comes to gemstone jewelry and the many possible ways to wear it. It could be just a simple piece that adds style to an office suit or several pieces to dress up for a night on the town.

 It seems that rubies are the most popular choices by far in many jewelry pieces. Rubies have a color that can be from pink to deep-blood, red and will give off an unrivaled brilliance in different types of light.

 The next favored choices in colored gems are the deep and brilliant hues of sapphires followed by the everlasting, green of emeralds. You could choose Tanzanite for regal and royal purple stones in your jewelry. Adding a touch of yellow or brown to your jewelry ornaments would have you choosing citrine as the perfect gem.
