When you think of holidays in the month of May most people will think of Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. There are others who think of Beltaine, also known as May Day, and Cinco de Mayo. What many of us don’t realize that there are some unique and even bizarre holidays that occur each day of the month of May. Some are educational whereas others leave some people scratching their heads.
Month Long Observance
Heritages and cultures are often celebrated in May. Some of these include Latino, Haitian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, and many others. Other month long holidays include National Smile Month, Motorcycle Safety Month, National Foster Care Month, Arthritis Awareness Month, and Teen Self-esteem Month just to name a few.
Week One
The first week is Teacher Appeciation week to honor all teachers. It is also National Postcard Week, Be Kind to Animals Week, Work at Home Moms Week, National Family Week, National Anxiety and Depression Awareness Week, Update Your References Week, Drinking Water Week, and so many more.
World Laughter Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in May. On the first Saturday of the month National Scrapbooking Day is celebrated. On the first Tuesday of the month is National Teacher Day. The first Friday and Saturday in May are days to celebrate Space Day.
As far as individual days, week one has plenty of holidays to observe. May 1st is of course Beltaine and May Day, but it is also Hawaiian Lei Day, Save the Rhino Day, Comic Book Day, Stepmother’s Day, School Principals’ Day, National Homebrew Day, and Mother Goose Day.
Some people celebrate Dr. Spock’s birthday on May 2nd. Dr. Spock was a renowned parenting guru of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Also celebrated on May 2nd is Fire Day.
In Japan, May 3rd is Constitution Memorial Day to honor the date their new constitution was signed. A holiday celebrated on this day that hits the bizarre list is Lumpy Rug Day and Wear Two Different Shoes Day. Also celebrated are Paranormal Day, and Garden Meditation Day.
May 4th has three holidays to choose from. There is, of course, National Weather Observers’ Day, but there is also Susan’s, from Seasame Street, birthday and National Candied Orange Peel Day.
May 5th is not only Cinco de Mayo, but National Hoagie Day. In Japan, Children’s Day is celebrated on this day.
Every wanted an excuse to cheat on your diet? Well May 6th is a good day for that considering it is International No Diet Day and Beverage
