When it comes to pizza, Apex, North Carolina has a wide variety of choices and most of them are good. We're not talking about Domino's or Papa John's here. We're talking real New York pizza, right here in North Carolina. There are many transplanted New Yorkers here and they know their pizza, so if you make pizza here, you better make it really good! And these places do.
Anna's Pizzeria, located in downtown Apex at 100 N. Salem Street, is probably one of the best places for pizza anywhere. (This family also owns another pizza place in East Northport, New York, which might explain why the pizza here is so good!) This is authentic New York pizza at its finest. It's never greasy and the crust is just right. They have everything from Bruschetta pizza to white pizza at Anna's and it's all delicious. While Anna's is a little more expensive than other pizzas in town, it's well-worth the extra few bucks.
Mamma Mia's is another great pizza place in Apex. Mamma Mia's is located in the Food Lion strip mall on Laura Duncan Drive, just outside of downtown. What's great here is the atmosphere and the pizza. You step into Mamma Mia's and it's like being with family. Family who can make excellent pizza! This is also authentic New York pizza and it's always made just right. No grease, crispy/chewy crust and the right amount of sauce. They offer a wide variety of toppings and a lot of kindness at Mamma Mia's.
Johnny's Pizza on Route 55 (Williams Street) is very good. I can't tell you about atmosphere because I've never actually been inside. They deliver. So, when I'm feeling like pizza and I am not feeling like going out, I call Johnny's. This was the first pizza I had in Apex when I moved here and I was in heaven. Finally! Someone who could make good New York pizza. The owner is quite a nice guy, too. Delivery is speedy and your pizza is never smushed. Most of the delivery people here are very nice guys and the prices are reasonable.
I offer up this last pizza place, Rudino's, on the recommendation of a friend. Rudino's is located at 800 W. Williams in the Harris Teeter strip mall. This family run business is rather large. They own about six restaurants in North Carolina and one in Ohio. I'm assured that this is a terrific place to eat and that the pizza is good. I'll have to trust my friend on this as I've never been there. But she says it's great pizza. (She's from North Carolina, though. So take her info any way you choose. I'm not being rude, I'm just saying she's not from New York!)
Pizza is, I've found out, a rather personal thing. Some people like it a certain way, usually the way they grew up with, and they can't stand anything else. For me, the best pizza is from New York but these pizza places in Apex are the closest thing I've had since I left twenty years ago and no other place I've lived can compare in the pizza department. Apex has pizza just like home.
