I think some of the best new Canadian music is found in several great bands.
Firstly, Missisauga's own 'the Meligrove Band'. A dynamic four piece, whose sound is laden in traditions that echo the best of Queen, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, while maintaining a distinctive contemporary pop sound. Singer Jason Nunes doubles up on piano and guitar during their vibrant live sets. Further augmenting the sound is Andrew Scott, secondary guitarist, who quickly drops synth lines with a free hand, picking up a trumpet or baritone trombone and embellishing lines. The solid rhythym section is comprised of Darcy Regos, and Mike Small. Everyone sings the harmony lines live, ensuring the cohesiveness from the record to the live show. The second record is a dynamic step forward, titled 'Planets Conspire'. An epic collection of dynamic rock, steeped in tradition while maintaining a modern pop approach.
As well, the Bicycles, which share a member with the Meligroves (Andrew Scott) deserve a mention as well. Songs that reflect the pop sensibilities of the Archies, and the Kinks early material. Quirky, catchy, excellent. Look for 'The Good, the Bad, and the Cuddly' for the Bicycles, wherever hip music is sold.
Moneen's latest release 'The Red Tree' has shown them much deserved attention. Their unique modern rock styled emo, is definately an accomplishment. From the blistering guitar heaviness that defines their sound, they stand out lyrically and sonically. Complex bridges, met with layered guitars, and energetic breakdowns, give a dramatic edge to the music that's refreshing.
For albums that focus on softer rock with a singer-songwriter appeal check out both Danny Michel's 'Valhalla', and Luke Doucet's 'Broken (and other rogue states)'. Doucet may be familiar as Sarah Mclaughlin's former guitarist.
If the softer rock sensibilties of the Cardigans appeals to you, then Winnipeg's Paper Moon is right up your alley. Heart-wrenching songs, with pixie-like vocals from the lead singer Allison will stay with you like a friend who's come for tea.
Other quick mentions:
The Golden Dogs- 'Big eye, Little eye'
Elliot Brood- 'Ambassador'
The Junction- 'And with this comes tomorrow'
Aaron Booth- 'Our Last Escape'
