Biography: Diane Lane

Diane Lane was born on January 22, 1965. Lane was born and raised in New York City, where soon her acting career would begin.

Lane was raised by her parents which were Colleen Farrington, also known as Colleen Price, a night club singer and a Playboy Centerfold for October 1957. Her father, Burton Eugene Lane, who was a drama coach in Manhattan. Lane’s parents later divorced when she was only 13 months old. Her mother was then awarded custody of her daughter up until the age of six, where Lane’s father later fought for custody of his daughter and won. Lane then went to live with her father, where she found herself moving in and out of hotels around the city.



At the age of 15, Lane wanted to become independent and decided to runaway from home. Leaving her father behind. She ran away to Los Angeles with the actor and also close friend, Christopher Atkins. She later believed that what she had done, was reckless behavior.

After knowing the faults of running away, Lane moved back to Los Angeles and decided to stay with a friend’s family.

Once returning back to Los Angeles, Lane decided to correspondence courses. During this time, Lane was kidnapped by her mother. Later her father went to court fighting her mother for kidnapping charges. He fought this for 6 weeks.

For three years, Lane could not bring herself to speak to her mother, then she finally felt that it was not worth the trouble and decided to reconcile with her mother.

Because of Lane’s maternal grandmother’s awesome sermons, Lane begin to grow a passion for acting. Where Lane begin acting at the age of six years old, in the La MaMa Experimental Theater Club in New York. Where she first begin acting in a production of Medea.

At the age of 12 years old, Lane received another assignment where she picked up the role in a Joseph Pappi’s production of The Cherry Orchard with the actor Meryl Streep. Around the time of her playing this role, Lane was also apart of an accelerated program at Hunter College High School. Which was later known that her grades turned into worse and she was left on notice to improve her grades.

The role in Runaways was later offered to her at the age of 13, she later turned down. Lane felt that she had too much already on her plate and she felt that she needed to stay more focused on her grades.

At the age of 14, Lane was placed on the Times Magazine cover, where she was given the title of one of Hollywood’s Whizz Kids.
