Music can be defined using terms like tone, pitch, timbre, beat and so on. But if you really think deeply about it, the definition of music goes way beyond our understanding of what it really is.
Music is not only heard, it is also felt. It effects us in different ways. For instance, if you are listening to loud blaring songs, you might become aggressive. On the other hand, if you listen to soft music, you might become calm. So with the premise that music effects our moods, we might say that music has a bigger influence on us than we think.
Music is a universal entity. You've heard that music is the universal language. It spans across the globe into every culture. In fact, different cultures have different instruments opposed to another culture. It's a very interesting phenomenon. Some cultures have instruments that have been used for thousands of years. For instance, the Indian sitar has been around for centuries.
So, what does all of this say about music? It says that music is much more than just beats on a drum. It can be defined as something that permeates the actual soul. It makes us do strange things, depending on the type of music you are listening to. If you are listening to music with continuous regular beats, you might feel like dancing. Music with nature sounds may put you in a meditative mood. It's not something we think about, but it is something that we feel.
We can define music by its individual parts, but that just gives us an outline of what it is. But when music has such a huge influence on us, it makes it harder and more complicated to define. We can say it is something we feel. So, if we feel music, what is the real definition? I suppose this will remain a mystery, as music effects each of us in a different way. There could be two people listening to the same piece of music, and you will get two quite different reactions.
The next time you are listening to music, stop for a moment and see how it effects you. Try to think of what kind of mood it generates in you. You may be in for a surprise. You may notice that music has a bigger influence on you than you think. The definition of music is an entity that causes you to feel at a very deep level.
