Cruelty in general may be defined an action or attribute of a person that is caused by lack of knowledge, wrong motive and not doing the proper research and preparation before committing to a hobby where life and care is involved and in this case, the up-keep of an aquarium as such.
Once one compare and considers the lifespan of fish like Cod and Haddock in the ocean, the idea that some little beautiful fish are well cared for and loved in a aquarium, should trigger positive thoughts as far as cruelty is concerned.
Most fish that are suitable for aquariums have a few years lifespan and apart from certain exotic species are mostly bred and cared for in the environment of aquariums, hence will adapt to it's surroundings and soon be contented and accept that it is an privileged world that they are born into and so also their offspring which may be born in the aquarium, lest most be eaten by predators or by their parents at birth in their natural habitat.
Aquariums as a hobby can be fun and like any other pet in or around the home will soon find it's place as part of the owner's pride.
However keeping an aquarium is a hobby that needs a lot of planning and research. Firstly one need consider the objective of wanting a aquarium. Research the advantages and disadvantages on the long term, and assess the time that must be committed and care to be given in the case of ones absence, as needless to say, all life is precious and in need of sincere commitment and care.
Depending on age and ability, children will be in need of supervision when it comes to feeding, cleaning and maintenance of the aquarium and general care.
However, on the positive side, apart from it's delightful display in the family home, aquariums do offer much beneficial therapeutic qualities as an reward.
Accepting , respecting and caring for your precious fish in a aquarium in a fashion such as your own private nature reserve, and designing it as such according to each fish’s need, leads the way forward to a clear conscience, and a exciting hobby which can only reward much leisure and contentment.
Book-stores and the Internet is obviously the best place to do research in the event that one may consider starting an aquarium as a hobby from scratch.
