Crochet has been popular for centuries. It is difficult to determine when and where crochet originated. Early forms of crochet have been found in different continents around the world. Cultures from past civilizations in Arabia, China, and South America have worked their own forms of crochet. Crochet became popular in Europe by the 1800s and by then, had developed into the more familiar form we know today. It has remained a popular hobby ever since.
Different styles originating in various regions have become renowned as belonging to that region or culture. Two very different such examples are Tunisian crochet, a rather heavyweight form of crochet from Tunis, and Irish crochet, a fine, lacy crochet originating in Ireland.
Probably the best reasons crochet is such a popular hobby is because it is quick to learn, quick to grow, relaxing, portable, and versatile. These are some of the reasons crochet has survived and grown in popularity:
*Easy to learn
Crochet is quick to learn as it is worked with just a few basic stitches. These stitches are combined in various ways to create many different effects. By varying the stitch combinations and yarn used many items such as garments, accessories, and household items can be made. The only equipment needed to begin is a crochet hook and yarn. Almost any yarn can be used, provided it can fit under the hook.
*Portable
Crochet can be stopped, put down and picked up again without unraveling. It is convenient to carry when traveling. Crochet hooks are less than 7 inches long and are permitted in carry-on baggage by most airlines.
*Relaxing
The rhythmic, repetitive movements are relaxing and help ease stress. People who crochet find it eases tension and promotes well-being. Crochet is quick to work so items grow fast, promoting a feeling of creativity and accomplishment. Crochet keeps your hands busy while watching television. It helps keep your hands out of the cookie jar too.
*Versatile
Depending on the thickness of the thread used and the stitches worked, you can crochet items from delicate lace to heavy-duty mats. Crochet lends itself to innumerable possibilities such as toys, clothing, quilts, throw rugs, tablecloths, place-mats, bath mats, flowers, jewelry, glasses cases, cell phone covers, book covers, and bags.
*Creative
Many crochet designers create new patterns for crochet every day. Crochet enthusiasts, eager for new patterns welcome these or attempt to design their own. There are endless possibilities for creativity with the versatility of crochet. You may design your own patterns one day too.
*Few tools
The only essential tools needed for crochet are a crochet hook and yarn. Further helpful equipment would be a tape measure, pins, scissors, and wool needle.
Crochet is enjoyable and versatile, it is a worthwhile skill to know. It is little wonder it is such a popular hobby.
