Finding Yourself
I didn't know I was lost
Until one day I looked in the mirror
And saw a stranger standing there
An older version of what was beautiful
But now worn.
What reflected was sadness and emptiness
The outline of a once strong heart
Now broken with sorrow
Over a life lost.
Lost by trying to be
What everyone else thought would be better
The quieter, softer version of who I could never be
And in conforming
I lost any semblance of me.
But one day, I started listening
To the voice that I had shunned
So long ago.
That's when I found myself...
She whispered great things to me
Kind words, softly spoken
Of my value and worth.
And this time, I listened
Intently.
Now I sing a better song
One filled with joy
Over a life truly lived
Celebrated even.
It's an older version looking back
From that mirror now.
But she knows who she is
Now that I came looking for her.

I am the woman some look at with distaste,
All that I am kept behind wit barbed gates.
I am someone you
They say I'm sweet and easy going,
but its they who are not knowing.
I put a smile and join the laughter,
only for a while
