Dating for the disabled

by Lawanda Ray

The wide world of dating can be tough to navigate for anyone, but when you steering the car with one arm, it gets really interesting. There are millions of disabled individuals out there searching for a soul. mate like everyone else. However, explaining your wheelchair, prosthetic, or limp can make for an awful conversational topic. So, if you are searching for a love and you happen to be disabled here are a few tips.

1. Be Realistic - If you are searching for love on-line, don't give your heart until the object of your affection knows everything there is to know about your situation. Bottom Line, you need to meet. Once you meet face to face you can judge how they react and respond to you. If they seem uncomfortable or unresponsive then you know that this is not the person for you. Don't allow yourself to get caught in a fantasy.

2. Laugh - Sometimes even the most well intentioned person can be nervous. Let's face it; a disability can sometimes cause people to be intimidated. They are afraid to offend you. Use humor to lessen tension and breeze through awkward silence.

3. Be Confident - Being disabled doesn't make you un-datable. You have to be confident in your dating qualities and skills. Think of all the things that you can bring to the relationship table and be proud of them. Are you a good listener? Can you cook? These are thing anyone would want in a mate.

4. Get out of the House - There are numerous studies that say that the disabled population rends to shy away from social settings. While I can understand seeing as I used to do the same, remember you can't meet anyone in your house. Get out and mingle; if it helps, go out with friends who can help ease the discomfort of a social setting.

There are all sorts of dating guides and advice out there for people, but few give pointers to people who are different. Dating can be a great experience as well as a terrifying one, maybe these few pointers will make it less scary for you.
