The Dachshund originated in Germany in the early 1600's and were bred to hunt badgers and small game. The dachshunds muscular and short legs allow them to hunt and to follow their prey into burrows deep beneath the ground. Dachshunds are a courageous dog despite their small build. They have been known to go head to head with foxes. Dachshunds have a proud and brave demeanor. The dachshund population used to be a small one during WW1, however their population began to increase when they were imported to the U.S. Their popularity has continued to increase ever since. Up until last year, dachshunds were one of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the United States.
Dachshunds are very curious as well as clever, loving, and entertaining. Dachshunds enjoy long walks outdoors and should be walked at least twice a day for 15-20 minutes. Dachshunds really must be walked on a leash since they are famous for taking off wherever a scent may take them. Dachshunds can benefit from taking a few obedience classes. They are known for running the household if they are allowed to. Dachshunds tend to have issues with separation anxiety. Many complain about the barking dachshunds do since
they tend to be excessive. They are also known for being diggers. A few obedience classes should help to curb this negative behavior.
Dachshunds are easy to train, however they can be difficult to house break. Dachshunds are very social and enjoy meeting people. They are excellent with children but do better with older children who know how to properly treat dogs. Dachshunds are extremely loyal to their family. They usually prefer one member of the family a little more than the rest. They enjoy living in the city or in the country. They do not require a lot of space but still enjoy being active.
Dachshunds don't have as many health or genetic problems as some other breeds have. Since they have such long bodies they can develop problems with their back and spine. It is a good idea to provide them with steps if you allow them to lay on the bed or furniture with you.Their weight needs to be watched since they are known for becoming over weight and lazy. Because of this possible weight issue, it is important to watch their snacks and to exercise them often. If you find your dachshunds weight is becoming an issue, speak with your veterinarian for ideas with foods you can feed them to help control weight. You can not go wrong with a Dachshund if your family life meets the basic criteria for conditions they do best in. They provide many years of wonderful memories.
