Are we strong enough to go back to basic US values?
Can any American answer me one question? Just exactly what are "Basic US Values?" Freedom of Speech? Obviously we still have that since we are writing articles here at Helium. Freedom of Press? Same results, although many Television News programs have become little better than the voice of one political party or another, giving up their objectivity in the process. Freedom of Religion? Still seems to be going strong since we haven't kicked out every Muslim in America since 9/11.
We may interpret the Bill of Rights differently than our forefathers when they created them, but those Ten Amendments to our constitution are basically what American (US) Values are. And as far as I can tell, while there may be a few problem areas here and there as we evolve as a society, those values are still strong and, if anything, are something that we as a country still believe are worth fighting and dying for. So, just what values are we talking about being strong enough to go back to?
It is obvious that this question is speaking of Religious Values, however coyly the question is posed. It should be pointed out that our forefathers did their best to encourage those values by instituting Freedom of Religion, but also did their best to separate our system of government from those same values. Which is probably the best thing Washington, Jefferson and the others could have done for us.
The reason? Simple. If we, as a country, let our Religious Values become our driving force, we will be no better than the Wahhabi sect of Islam who send terrorists to our very doorstep to kill us.
If those values are adopted by our government we would wage Holy War on the world when they disagreed with us. The very idea should terrorize each and every American alive today.
Many of you will argue that we would not let it happen. You would argue that Christian Values are peaceful and would not drive us to Crusade against the world. I would say, Bull Crap!, and put it a lot more strongly, thanks to Freedom of Speech. Something that Religions do not actually espouse, by the way.
Religions are designed by nature to limit what you can say and do. This is not a point that can be argued, although many of you will try, I am sure. I'm not saying this a bad thing, actually, but it is contrary to basic US values.
It was those religious values that led to the Monroe Doctrine and the death of the Native American culture that had been flourishing on this continent
