How serious is global warming?

Global warming and its catastrophic circumstances are unfortunately not in front of us enough yet to warrant the alarm this pending danger poses for the human race, though some scientists feel its effects are showing up in larger and more frequent hurricanes and tornadoes, tsunamis, floods and earth-quakes (Climate change: melting ice will trigger wave of natural disasters, Robin McKie, The Observor, 9/6/2009).

For those concerned with more immediate matters in their daily lives or those who are simply in denial about the mounting scientific data that supports this threat, it’s seriousness has yet to make an impact on the general public.

To presume as some do that it is unworthy of serious consideration is a choice one makes for whatever reasons they adhere to.  But to profess that view openly where other, less informed people may heed such advice, is socially irresponsible.

The scientific community is making as much noise as it knows how to; not having control of governments and the media, their alarms are often deluded and drowned out by the mis-informers within these institutions.

The consensus of climate scientists also do not have the funding from the fossil fuel industry that pay a small band of willing scientist to muddy the waters on information about the man-made effects to global warming

Without such resources their message is unable to prevent most people in developed nations to alter the life-styles they have become accustomed to and that will ultimately seal their fate unless things change soon.

Lest you think I exaggerate, let’s hear from the people who have studied this problem for years:

“Global Warming [is] the most serious long-term, preventable threat to the health and well-being of our nation and the world.”  - Dr. Joseph Romm from his book “Straight Up” (p.5)

“Planet Earth, creation, the world in which civilization developed, … is in imminent peril.   - Dr. James Hansen, leading researcher on global warming, NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (“Storms of My Grandchildren”)

“Global warming is the biggest and most serious problem faced by us in this century. Climate change is happening and its effects are real. If we do not take it seriously, it will have serious consequences that will affect the generations to come,"  -  Sir David Anthony King, Chief Scientific Adviser to the U.K. Government.
