When a boat is controlled using fabric foils, it is known as sailing. The wind speed is managed using the sails to monitor the boat’s direction and speed. This is learnt with experience after sailing in different water and wind weather conditions. Calm days with not much energy in the wind and water is not very good for sailing, it only drifts the boat. Knowing the ideal sailing conditions can help to enjoy the sport to the fullest.
Nature and Experience
As you sail, you work with the nature’s forces and weather. A good sailor should be able to judge the ideal weather conditions using a mariner compass and studying the weather a week prior to the sailing day. The wind and sea weather conditions need to be monitored since they largely impact your sailing activity.
It is also a good idea to learn about ideal sailing conditions from an experienced sailor. Only a sailor with lot of experience can tell you how to use the sails and handle the sailboat during different weather conditions. Beginners and amateurs are recommended to train well under such instructors and sailors who have sailed in tough conditions.
Checking weather conditions
The internet and newspapers can help to keep a track of ideal sailing conditions. A boating club or even a store selling surfing equipment can provide you some details of the weather conditions that are favorable for sailing. The marine radio channels also give almost accurate information about sailing weather and other key tips related to this activity.
Weather monitoring tools and sailing
You would have heard of the device called a barometer. It is perfect to know the ideal sailing conditions. Air and pressure changes are monitored by this device. A good weather is when the barometer shows a rise. If it falls, you can anticipate a bad weather. An anemometer is another essential device for sailors and boaters. This measures the speed of the wind. Light or medium wind is perfect for sailing.
Knowing the weather of your local region or the area where you go sailing can be quite helpful. You could also track this if you have an I-phone with the weather apps. Even an internet search can help you know the local weather on various weather related websites.
Finally, as you go sailing, keep a tab on the weather using the radio and checking the weather as you sail. If you spot the sky getting darker and any sudden change in the wind or spot of rain and thunder, then it is better if you get away to the land.
