Job applicants are notorious for stretching the truth on their resumes, but they're models of virtue compared to some of the people who participate in online dating sites.
This is not to say that everyone who joins a dating site is a liar. People who are looking for someone to marry tend to stick closer to the facts when they build their profiles than someone who is just interested in casual dating. After all, marriage involves commitment and takes place after a courtship of at least a few months, so anyone who is being dishonest about themselves is likely to be discovered before heading down the aisle.
But for many people, dating sites are nothing more than a way to meet someone for a brief fling, and, like the person who lies on their resume about their level of education or experience, they're willing to go to any length to make themselves appear to be a good catch. They pretend they make more money than they actually do, they pretend they're younger than what they are and, worst of all, they even pretend they're single when they're not.
Dishonesty is rampant on online dating sites. However, these sites can play a valuable role in meeting that special someone. First, you can't expect honesty from someone unless you're also being honest. So, participants on these sites must fill in their information as accurately as possible. You will, without doubt, meet people who are being dishonest, but it shouldn't take too long to separate those who are truly interested in a long-term relationship from those who are merely playing games.
The dating scene can be fun, but be aware the people you meet on dating sites may not be who they say they are. Until you get to really know that person, you need to ensure your safety. Make sure the first few meetings take place in a public venue, and, if possible, go with another friend. If alarm bells go off in your head, it'll be easier to just bring the date to an end. Also, don't trust your new friend with personal information, such as financial information, account numbers and similar data that someone with criminal intent can use against you. This is good advice even with people you are more familiar with, let alone someone you hardly know.
Have fun, but be cautious and remember that it takes a lot of time to really get to know someone.
