So your going to the beach today for a picnic and you want to bring the pooch. Its okay! You can bring them. There are however rules that all dog owners must follow on the beach. So read this little guide and you will be ready for some fun in the sun!
Etiquette does exist for dog owners on the beach and most dog owners already know the rules. It is important to follow them or the other dog lovers will not like you (or your pooch) very much. It is simple:
* Poop
* Play
* Leashes
* Other People and Dogs
Poop: We all know every living mammal has to poop. Dogs are no exception and you can't force a dog to not poop on the beach if it wants to. So this means carry some gloves and a plastic bag to pick up after them. Many people will say they get mad when a dog poops on the beach and the owner doesn't pick it up. This is probably the most overlooked rule when it comes to beach etiquette but its very important! Some beaches even offer a special "Poop Can" and complimentary baggies. Plain and simple, if they poop, you scoop!
Play: This can be a tricky rule to follow but its important. Most dogs have different play styles and you adapt to what they like to do. It may not work on the beach though. Say your golden retriever Jake loves his favorite bone toy and you bring it out with you. Most likely, other dogs will like it too and "steal" it from your dog. This can create a little tension between you and the other dog owner. If your gonna bring toys, throw them in a direction other dogs aren't playing. What I like to do is find a stick and play with it. Most dogs love sticks and will be perfectly happy with it. Plus if other dogs want to join in, its no big loss for poor Jake.
Leashes: Definitely need to bring a leash. It is the law on most beaches that isn't enforced because dogs love to go out and play. But it is the law! Some people may also be a little timid around your dog because they don't know them and a leash may alleviate that tension a little bit.
Other people and dogs: Be aware of your surroundings. Your dog may be the sweetest, fun loving dog around but it doesn't change the fact that other dogs or people may not be. Watch where your dog is playing. Watch other dogs and be aware of their attitudes and play styles. Be sure your dog is not afraid of children because they may be 50% of the population at the beach!
One last word of advice for beach dog etiquette is bring water. Your little pup needs it!
