How to organize coupons

by Beth Oliver

Created on: April 26, 2010

I love coupons. I know they have gained popularity with the economy being so poor but I think everyone should use them no matter the state of the economy. No excuses.  I save so much money and get to shop for free all the time using my coupons. But I am not an organized person at all. I have tried so many different organizational methods with my coupons. Now I found a system that really works for me. I have an entire copy box of coupons so it is not possible for me to have all my coupons with me at all times. I know I miss out at times on sales and good deals but it is okay.

I keep a coupon wallet in my purse with the coupons that I will always use. Items like my dogs food, certain treats we always buy and other items I know I will use. In that organizer, the coupons are divided into sections of Pet, Drinks, Food, Laundry, Health and Beauty Items. This works out well for me.

The rest of my coupons are in that big copy box. I keep the entire coupon insert together. I then rubber band the stack of inserts and keep them in the box by date. That way whenever I need a coupon, I find out what insert the coupon was in and then I go to the insert and clip away. My coupons are always in order, I know right where they are and this way I don't lose any of them.

Another method I tried was the envelopes. I would cut all my coupons out and then sort them by category. That was very time consuming and really there were just too many coupons in the envelopes. I could never find the coupons I was looking for.

There are so many people who use the binder system. Get a binder and use the same plastic pages used for baseball/hockey cards. Then you can group the coupons in that binder either by category, by expiration date or by type.

Once I know what coupons I need I cut them and paper clip them together with the list and for each separate store. Everyone has their own method of organizing their coupons. Whatever system works for you is the best. Coupons can save you so much money. Anytime you can use them you should.
