There are a number of different types of headaches people can suffer with. Some headaches are considered to be chronic where the sufferer experiences them on a regular basis. Migraine and cluster headaches fall into this chronic category. Tension headaches are often experienced by those who are feeling overly stressed or is a result from straining the eyes. Many times after looking at a computer screen for a long period of time will result in a tension headache. Sinus headaches are usually experienced by those who have allergy or sinus conditions. Headaches can result from being exposed to a particular odor or chemical that does not agree with you. Headaches can also be caused poor posture, spinal misalignment, physical stress, poor diet, constipation, and other digestive issues. If you notice you tend to get a headache after reading or watching television, it might be possible you need to wear corrective glasses. Many times people go see the doctor because of experiencing regular headaches and learn they need glasses. The doctor will determine this as a likely possibility after asking a number of questions about when these headaches usually occur. Of course, other more serious health possibilities should be ruled out first. Once the doctor rules out these other possibilities, he or she will refer you to an Ophthalmologist who will test your eyes more thoroughly and make the final decision. It can be very helpful to keep a journal with details about when the headaches occur along with foods you ate and the activities you were doing prior to the headache. There are a number of people who get headaches from eating certain foods or from additives and preservatives in the food. Take the journal with you when going to see the doctor. This is good information for you and the doctor to better determine what might be causing your headaches.
The most common type is the tension headache which usually starts at the base of the head or neck with a dull and non-throbbing pain. It is estimated that 90% of all headaches are caused by excessive tension in the face, head, and neck muscles. Migraine headaches are fairly common among the population. Migraines affect 10 to 15 percent of men and 30 to 35 percent of women. Women likely get migraines more often because of the changes in hormonal conditions during the menstrual cycle.
