How to cope with being a loner

by Mr. Joshua

Created on: April 25, 2010

As a loner myself, I can say that the best way to survive a loner's life is through acceptance. From my experience, one of the downsides of being a loner is that people tend to have bad (usually wrong) impressions about you. The most common is arrogance. Personally speaking, I don't talk and socialize that much, and people around me would most likely think that I am utterly disdainful towards them. Of course, I cannot blame them for having that kind of thought, but to be honest, it serves as a big distraction for loners such as myself. But like I said, acceptance is the key! In dealing with solitude, here are the things I've learned throughout the years:

1.) Focus on your passion!

Loners have passions too and it's probably the best fuel for you to keep on going. You should keep in mind that not all hobbies, activities, or just about anything you're passionate with, will require you to interact with others and have some sort of a social circle you have to keep up with. As much as possible, ignore the criticisms and just focus on what you think is good for you.

2.) Try to seek comfort!

There are times when you would feel uncomfortable and "out of place" especially when you have to attend a family reunion or any social event. That awkward feeling of being a wallflower is sometimes disturbing, to be honest! But in times like this, you don't have indulge yourself into something that you would normally avoid. Instead, try to find something you can do that doesn't compromise the essence of a certain event. And if someone approaches you, just try to flash a smile and say hello - quite simple to do, really!

3.) Know and practice your potential!

This, of course, is related to your passion! Although people may consider you as someone who isn't sociable, opportunities are always present regardless on how you would carry yourself through the crowd. Knowing your potential will serve as one of the roads to acceptance.

4.) Have a good mindset and positive outlook in life!

Lastly, always remember that those sociable people or extroverts are not the only ones who are living on this planet. We all share one common thing which is, life! However, we still bear some differences within ourselves. Introverts and extroverts have their own place on Earth. This is a fact we all need to accept and it's more than enough reason for any loner to have a positive mindset or outlook about his/her life.
