Why computer role playing games fail

by Lyle 'Chip' Chipperson

As a hobbyist programmer (don’t you hate it when people start their articles that way with ‘as a _______’), I have also created my own RPG via RPG Maker 95, a comedy-based one entitled ‘Misadventures Of Unhappyland,’ or ‘MOU’ when using the acronym. In addition to that, I also created a UFC Fighting-style simulator and also co-created a old-time virus that if installed on your computer (with Win98 or before), it will start up, play an annoying loop on your PC speaker (if provided it was turned on) and insult you constantly until you press the right key to stop it. An interesting thing about this insulter virus is that some insults would pertain as your computer is insulting you. Such as: “If I had legs, I’d kick your a*.”

Each time I think about that, I imagine a computer nerd using his computer, and suddenly it grows legs and does as it says when provided it has it’s legs.

But my role-playing game entitled MOU was a failure all-together (like all my other programs). One contributing factor would be that it was created with a RPG Maker. Pretty much anybody with a basic understanding of RPGs can make a RPG game with RPG Maker. So, that is probably why some people were reluctant in downloading it for free back when I made it in 2000, via my previous website. It did receive some downloads and some reviews good & bad via a RPG Maker resource site, and was one of the few games that wasn’t a demo or a work in progress, it was complete.

Yet, the haters of my game had their points, besides having it created via RPG Maker 95, which is a sore-eye to some people who enjoy computer-based RPG’s, it wasn’t a game taken seriously. It was a comedy-based RPG, a rarity besides the Super Nintendo game called Earthbound. And I think most RPG lovers like to have their games under a ‘serious nature.’ Of course, a game with ‘serious nature’ could have a few lines of funny dialogue. MOU’s dialogue was mostly stupid and funny. I suppose the haters were not interested in a Earthbound wanna-be.

Advancing to the subject at hand, would MOU received some better exposure and frequent reviews if ported to a Playstation or Nintendo 64, those were the big systems at the time in 2000-01? The answer would be yes. But, I bet GameStop and retail stores that sell video games would thro the game in the clearance rack for a mere dollar, and for those unlucky
