Moving is a life changing experience. It's natural to be attached to a certain location, especially if you've been living there for a long time. At the same time, moving also requires a lot of diligence and preparation to complete with little to no problems.
Preparation for moving can be broken down into two main categories. Mentally preparing your family to move to a new home, and physically preparing your family to move to a new home. Physical preparation would fall under something like making sure you would have internet or cable there, possibly contacting the local cable company before you move there, and mental preparation would be something like learning about the area as much as possible before moving there.
Mental Preparation:
Exploration:
If you have children or teenagers in your family and they are particularly attached to the town you are currently staying at, it's going to create problems right off the bat. Other than the resistance you're going to have to face, you will have to comfort them by giving them information about the place you are moving to, before you move there. You can give them a map of the area, a list of activities you can do there, even visiting the area in person with the child/teenager so they get a feel for the area.
A lot of adults also do not like dealing with moving, partially because it is very stressful, and sudden abrupt change in one's life is rarely ever good. The best way to clear moving anxiety is to know the area you are moving to, so the natural fear of the unknown is alleviated.
Discuss the Options:
A good thing to do if you do not know for sure where you are moving yet is to discuss the options with your family. If your family gets a say on where to move to, it can relieve a lot of anxiety. You may want a town with stores and a downtown area, but your family may be looking for a more countryside type location. It's always good to have options, so it's easier for compromises to be made.
Physical Preparation:
Moving Companies:
When moving, you will need to contact a moving company to move your items. Be sure you choose a good moving company, because with many moving companies that are so-so, some of your items will get damaged. Also, be sure to tell the moving company about any extremely large items you have to move, such as a piano, or a sofa. Usually companies charge extra money for these large items, and if they are not notified in advance, the workers will refuse to take it with the other items.
