If you use multiple computers, or even multiple browsers on the same computer, it comes in handy backing up your bookmarks online. There are a number of services which can help you do this, and they do have a few different features. For example, some people have actually started using Twitter for saving url´s - which can be useful for the short term and for sharing, but a bit more messy for the long term, as you don't have much structure in Twitter.
If you want to have your data with big and stable companies, there are popular services such as Google Bookmarks and Delicious.com (owned by Yahoo!) which are easy to use. If you on the other hand still want to keep your bookmarks in the browser and simply want the online storage as a backup, there is a solution for that as well - for this I would recommend Xmarks (former Foxmarks), which lets you keep a backup online and synchronize between multiple browsers and computers. If you like Xmarks and use Firefox, you might also like FEBE, which lets you do basically the same for extensions.
Further options could be to save your favorite websites through Facebook and get a discussion going about them with your friends. If you instead want more possibilities for organizing them, you might want to try Diigo - which still gives you a lot of collaboration, and can be a great tool for research cooperation. Other options include Furl, Mister Wong, Magnolia and Simpy. Either option you select, I would recommend that you research them before deciding which service to use, as for example Magnolia had some trouble with their servers last year.
My personal setup is to save the most important bookmarks to my browser, backing it up with Xmarks and thereby having them close at all my computers. If I want to share something with a person I collaborate for a project, I post it on Delicious.com (through the Shareaholic extension in Firefox - one of many handy tools for sharing) and simply include the person I want to share with when saving. Sharing with friends and family is done primarily through Facebook, while Twitter (both also through the Shareaholic extension) is the destination if I want to share something with a group I'm less closely related to. You might however have guessed that I have recently started researching Diigo as an interesting possibility.
