Frisbee golf, or widely known as disc golf, is a sport on the rise and highly addictive. Appropriate for all ages and athletic tastes, players are trying to throw successfully their discs into the designated baskets in the fewest number of attempts. Nevertheless, as with any other sport, the right equipment is essential to fully enjoy the thrill and joy the game has to offer. Especially if you are a new player, you will have to purchase the appropriate discs for you to help you maximize your chances for victory. Otherwise, a mistaken choice may easily lead to annoying rounds that will make you quit the game once and for all. Here are some helpful tips for choosing the correct disc:
If this is your first time, the general rule is to purchase lighter discs to help you maneuver them in the best possible way. Lighter discs fly straight and are extremely stable without easily changing rotation enabling you to hit the target more efficiently. Moreover, they fly faster due to their aerodynamic structure. To help you choose easier, these discs are categorized based on their glide number that varies from 0 to 6 where 6 are the ones flying faster than any other.
As with moderate golf, you need a different disc for each target. In particular:
Long Flyers
For long distance baskets, you need a disc able to fly fast into the wind demanding the least effort and strength. Generally, a disc speed is measured on a scale of 1 to 12 where 12 is the one with the best aerodynamic ability. Yet, due to their overall structure and capability to travel long distances, long flyers maximize the possibility of an error.
Curvers
Not all shots are easy; you may have to turn your disc around a bush or a rock to hit the target. For these shots, you will need a curver disc able to turn when and where you want to. Their ability to turn is set on a scale from 0 to 5 where 0 is the most flexible one. Practice your curved shots using different scale discs each time to find the one that best fits your needs and techniques.
Putters
Disc golf putters are especially designed for short distances. A putter weighting from 160 to 170 grams is highly recommended but it is best to hold several ones to choose the best for you. As with other disc golf types, putters are set on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is the one flying larger distances with the maximum accuracy. Additionally, pay attention to the disc’s edge as they vary from totally flat to razor-sharp. For closer targets and most accurate throws, it is best to purchase a putter disc with the flatter edge.
If you are a rookie player, then it you should probably buy a large in diameter putter disc. The larger the better as it will fly more precisely and expectedly than smaller discs. Furthermore, you should also estimate the disc’s grip as grip augmentations, such as pits, can significantly boost accuracy.
Professional disc golf players carry more than 10 discs in different types, weights and diameters to use the proper one for each target. Furthermore, skilled players also recommend floating and colorful discs as you never know where it will land. As you advance and become a more experienced player, you will be able to hit targets much easier and with the least effort. After all, practice makes perfect! Purchase the right equipment and enjoy!
