The media, golf players and golfing fans have a slightly different choice when it comes to naming golf’s most famous hole. This article would like to provide an introduction to three famous golf holes, each with its own hold at fame: Augusta National’s 12th Hole, the par 3 7th Hole at Pebble’s Beach and TPC’s Signature 17th Hole at Sawgrass.
Augusta National’s par 3 12th Hole
Part of the ‘Amen Corner’ that included the 11th and the 13th hole, 12th hole also known as the Golden Bell, is part of the Augusta National Golf club in Augusta, Georgia considered by many as America’s most revered course and home to the Masters Tournament. Augusta.com describes it as, “Probably the most famous par three in golf. Narrow target, water in front, trouble at the back …” The great Jack Nicklaus called Augusta National’s par 3 12th as the hardest hole in tournament golf.
Pebble Beach’s par 3 7th Hole
Another par 3 that has proven itself as a challenge to golfers is the 7th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links at Pebble Beach, California. Unlike the invitation and men-only Augusta, any golf enthusiast can play at Pebble Beach and try their tee on its famous 7th hole. The most photographed hole in golf overlooks the sometimes stormy waters off the Pacific Ocean.
Tournaments played at the Pebble Beach include: AT&T Pebble beach National Pro-Am, has hosted the US Open 4 times including the 2010 US Open and the PGA Championship in 1977.
The TPC’s Signature 17th Hole at Sawgrass
Also known as the ‘Island Green’, the TPC’s Signature 17th hole at Sawgrass is at Ponte Vedra Beach Florida is considered to be golfing’s most famous hole in terms of media frenzy. The hole gets its time in the limelight every year for The Players Championship. Owing to its unusual design, Island Green is a notoriously difficult hole and is considered a challenge even by professional golfers. Rare as it may be to see uncertainty in the eyes of the golf greats, TV stations and golf commentators cover and discuss the S17th hole at TPC and how each of them measure up to it year in and year out .
The S17th hole of the TPC at Sawgrass was designed by the husband and wife team of Pete and Alice Dye - with the later suggesting the design of the 17th hole. It was originally a crater left open after digging out sand for the entire course. The 137-yard hole with a 78-foot green surrounded by water has given golfers jitters for years. Among the tournaments regularly held at TPC’s two main courses are the Champion’s Tour and Nationwide Tours.
