Science vs. religion: Understanding the differences

by Lenna Gonya

Created on: April 18, 2010

Scientists and religionists have been going at it ever since early man had the audacity to suggest that the earth revolves around the sun. And, it’s a shame, since science and religion could coexist.

For centuries, the Bible was the only reference that we had to explain the creation of the earth, or for that matter, why anything happened in our world and universe. But, it was only a matter of time before mankind began to branch out on their own and question the cause and effect principles that made up their world.

In spite of church criticism, persecution, and worse, they pushed forward, and in many cases, their differences were reconciled.

However, even today, there are some scientists who will immediately go on the defensive over religious theories and vice versa.

The truth is that science does not know everything, nor can they explain everything, even today. For all our sophisticated knowledge, we are still infants in the realm of space, and elements right here on earth.

Every day we hear about episodes of miraculous healings, or rescues that shouldn’t have happened by any scientific explanation, and yet they did.

After years of examination, theories, testing and attempts at recreation, we are still no further ahead at discovering what or who created the Shroud of Turin.

Religionists brace themselves for a fight at the mere mention of evolution, yet it is a proven fact that mankind evolved. And, there were dinosaurs on the earth.

The Bible explains the creation in the words and manner that was passed down for thousands of years. If you want to get technical, it states that there were giants on the earth, and, that although God made man, and gave him knowledge, it doesn’t say that this particular man was his first attempt.

Science has a field day over the story of Noah and the Ark, yet recent finds have indicated that there were more floods than anyone had been aware of. One of these, no doubt, was Noah’s. And someone, at some point in time, remembered this event and passed it along.

A few years ago, a group of scientists went to great lengths to describe the creation of the planet earth. They gave a lot of scientific data on how there was a big bang and the earth was formed, and how later, the water and the land separated, and there was atmosphere and days, and seasons.

You have to wonder if they realized that they were describing creation from the Book of Genesis.

If historians, scientists, and religionists would let down their defenses long enough to listen to each other, they might just find out that they aren’t so far apart after all.
