Vermont in Summer
At twilight your skies fade from deep azure
to a pale, translucent clarity at the horizon,
like a Maxfield Parrish painting, glowing from within.
The stars dance between the swaying pine branches,
winking at me when no one is looking.
I could reach out and sweep my hand through the Milky Way,
my fingers dripping with watery light.
Lying in the dewy grass among the fireflies and singing crickets,
the weight of the entire sky presses down on me.
Yet I am not crushed by its immensity.
Your cozy hills nestle around me like mounded-up blankets, and
I feel safe in their maternal embrace.

Twilight

As the light fades and the darkness is held at bay

The meridian
Flicks its tongue
A dusty pink road
Floating away in the wind,
Gone
